Welcome back, climate leaders.

➡️ I’ll be sending another update on the state of Acclimate this weekend. My takeaways on the survey results, what’s next for the newsletter, and a couple of new opportunities to share.

And because Monday is labor day, the next newsletter will be on Tuesday. Enjoy the long weekend.

In today’s edition:

HOT TOPICS

  1. 🔥 Disaster relief: As the US recovers from climate-related disasters, Biden's administration unveiled nearly $3 billion in funding aimed at enhancing climate resiliency in hundreds of communities. Funds will boost critical resilience and flood mitigation projects through FEMA.

  2. Critical minerals: Resource nationalism is gaining traction as countries like Ghana, Indonesia, and Namibia prioritize domestic mineral processing to maximize revenue. Amidst escalating demand, they're increasingly banning raw mineral exports, compelling mining entities to invest in local facilities.

  3. 🌬️ Wind power: The US Gulf Coast region will host the first-ever regional offshore wind auction, directed towards stimulating a green hydrogen supply chain, demonstrating a departure from regular federal offshore wind lease sales, which have mainly focused on power markets and carbon-free electricity subsidies.

  4. ☀️ Coal → Solar: NV Energy intends to invest $1.8 billion in infrastructure to increase solar capacity and cease coal-fired power, including a $1.56 billion solar facility, an $83 million gas conversion of the last coal plant, and significant transmission improvements. This will result in a cleaner energy grid and boost job creation.

  5. ⚡️ VPPs: Tesla's two virtual power plants are cleared to power Texas' grid, being the initial duo in a planned eight-plant series. They've completed testing, and join the state's ADER pilot, under ERCOT's surveillance, boasting a combined 7.2 MW power.
